The Senate’s parliamentarian ruled last week that the minimum wage hike would not be eligible to pass through the complicated budget reconciliation process. Democrats have turned to that process to push through President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. Legislation passed through budget reconciliation requires only a simple majority to pass in the Senate, instead of the 60 votes generally required because of the legislative filibuster rule, and would not necessarily require any Republican support, given the upper chamber’s current makeup....

The congresswoman’s remarks came Tuesday during a House Oversight and Reform Committee on paid family and medical leave. The United States is one of two nations in the industrialized world that does not provide any federal form of paid leave. “The market has decided. Eighty percent of families don’t have access to paid family leave,” Ocasio-Cortez said. Archaeologist Michael Brown of Germany’s Heidelberg University and colleagues believe they may have found Natounia, an ancient military and religious complex in the Zagros Mountains dating to more than 2,000 years ago. In July, Brown published a paper about the excavations and analysis, titled Rabana-Merquly: a fortress in the kingdom of Adiabene in the Zagros Mountains, in Cambridge University’s Antiquity journal. Two settlements, a stone fortress, and other buildings, known as Rabana-Merquly, were found on what was once the border of ancient Adiabene....
