The incoming President put this question to rest in a Washington press conference with Vice-President-elect Richard Cheney. When asked by NBC’s Claire Shipman what he intended to do first as President, Bush stated, “I wanna rock and roll all night.”
“And party every day,” Cheney clarified.
Bush watchers had expected that the former Texas Governor’s work habits–which include long daily gym sessions and frequent naps–would mean a departure from the Clinton administration’s round-the-clock White House schedule. Reporters, however, were surprised at the extent to which Bush was willing to be candid about the more relaxed nature of his new Administration.
“You say you want to go for a spin,” Bush told the assembled reporters. “The party’s just begun, we’ll let you in.”
Cheney, however, warned reporters not to be overly critical of the Bush White House’s abbreviated work hours.
“You drive us wild, we’ll drive you crazy,” Cheney told the press corps. “You show us everything you’ve got.”
“Baby, baby, that’s quite a lot,” Bush added.
At the conclusion of the press conference, Bush and Cheney told the reporters, “Good night, D.C. Remember us, we’ll remember you,” before leaving the briefing room. Reporters, raising Bic lighters over their heads, were disappointed when the two men did not return.
