The 66-year-old was presented with a crystal vase by Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswick ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Burnley in recognition of his 20 year service to the club.
Wenger has won three Premier League titles and six FA Cups along the way, with former players including Lauren, Freddie Ljungberg and Jens Lehmann a major part of the silverware success over the years.
Goal spoke to those three, as well as Anders Limpar who recently featured in the Arsenal Legends charity match at the Emirates Stadium, for an exclusive word on the philosophical Strasbourg-born boss who has changed the face of English football.
He will always be in the history of Arsenal. What he has done in the past 20 years has been fantastic. Arsenal went from George Graham with more defensive football to passing, attacking football - this kind of achievement is fantastic. There are many memories I have with him. There were many situations when the team were losing at halftime and he gave the right words at the right moments. I always remember those situations. He knows what to say to people, when to say it and how. He is the best Arsenal manager ever. Arsenal have gone on to become one of the best teams in Europe and he’s also contributed with the new stadium, training ground and introduced diets for the players. He helped the club compete in the modern era. You see Arsenal are worldwide today. He’s been a modern coach for a modern era in a modern institution.
I think he’s immense. He turned the club around if you look at the way we play now. From 1-0 to Arsenal all the time we were winning 3 or 4 nil. He started that passing game in England with all the success and if you look at when we built the stadium here there was no money really. He still managed to go in the Champions League because they paid off the debt on the stadium. Sometimes I think that’s get forgotten a little a bit. He’s been massively important.
I think he’s probably the most successful manager in making money for the club. He’s always qualified for the Champions League, buying cheap and selling expensive. He was a major player in setting up the new stadium and at the same time always playing European football.
He means everything. You can never ever question what Arsene Wenger has done for the club, economically or trophy wise - the lot. He is the best manager in the history of Arsenal Football Club. He’s not done yet but when the time comes an ex-player like Tony Adams should be considered for the job.
