With only a heart emoji as the caption, Avery’s post was cryptic in nature. The picture was liked more than 1,000 times by her 11,800 followers. While social media users aren’t generally known for their compassion, most of the posts in the comment section were congratulatory and uplifting.

A 90 Day Fiancé fan account spotted Avery in New York City on Thursday, along with co-stars Darcey Silva and Tom Brooks. “Looks like a bunch of the cast was in NYC recently …. I’m just glad to see Avery is not currently in Syria,” the account captioned the photo.

90 Day Fiancé: The Other Ways shows Avery, a 19-year-old from Columbus, Ohio, traveling to Lebanon to meet Omar, a 24-year-old dentist from war-torn Syria. Her mother joined her for the trip, but doesn’t know that Avery plan to live with Omar in Syria once they are married.

Avery converted to Islam last year. She joined a Muslim dating app looking for a partner in the U.S. She didn’t know Omar was living in Syria when they first started talking.

Avery’s family has been critical of her choice to convert, but she doesn’t care what anyone thinks. “I have never cared about what people thought in the past. No one can sway my decision on my choices,” she told Newsweek in a phone interview. “I really make my own path and I’ll tell them that.”

She doesn’t have any regrets about her new religion or life as a Muslim woman. “I believed in God, but I wasn’t always 100 percent confident in all of the Christian views. I was open to learning about Islam and never expected to convert, but I was curious, so I asked some Muslim friends about Islam. Everything I learned shocked me, it made so much sense and I realized it’s an amazing religion,” she said. “The turning moment for me was when I went into a mosque and had a moment in my heart I knew I was with the right people, in the right place, about to follow the right path.”

While Islam might not be for everyone, Avery advised that each person should follow their own journey—no matter what other people might say. “…Our lives are very short. Don’t get too caught up in what doesn’t matter and prepare for the hereafter where there’s an infinite amount of time,” she told Newsweek.
