We were sitting around a table in the cabinet room late at night, drafting and re-drafting President Truman’s statement to the press about relieving General MacArthur of command in Korea. One of the president’s national-security aides, Ted Tannenwald, suggested putting into Truman’s statement the fact that he was doing this on the unanimous recommendations of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The president said, “No, I’m not going to hide behind anybody. I’m going to do it myself as the commander in chief.”
