According to the latest survey from Harvard CAPS-Harris pollsters, a little more than a quarter (27 percent) of U.S. voters believe the country is on the right track—an all-time low since the monthly poll began in February 2017.

When the same poll was conducted in February, the proportion of U.S. voters who thought the country was on the right track was 14 points higher, with 41 percent believing America was heading in a good direction.

The latest edition of the monthly survey also found that almost two-thirds of U.S. voters (64 percent) felt America was on the wrong track—up by 11 percentage points on February.

The last time 60 percent of American voters told Harvard/Harris pollsters that the country was on the wrong track was in October 2017.

A little less than one-in-ten voters (9 percent) said they didn’t know whether the country was heading along the right track or the wrong track.

Asked how confident they were about the direction of the U.S. economy, 60 percent of voters said they believed it was heading in the wrong direction as the official level of unemployment stood at a little more than 13 percent.

Thirty percent felt the economy was on the right track, up three points on the 27 percent who gave pollsters the same answer in May. Ten percent said they were unsure about the direction the U.S. economy was heading toward.

Almost two-thirds (61 percent) recognized that the U.S. economy was in a weak position, while 39 percent told pollsters they believed the economy was strong.

A majority of polled voters also said they approved of President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy, with 53 percent backing his record on the issue despite the increase in unemployment and GDP contraction in the first quarter of this year.

But when they were asked how they rated the commander-in-chief’s overall performance in the Oval Office, polled voters had a different reaction. Fifty-seven percent said they disapproved of Trump’s overall record, while the remaining 43 percent backed the president.

When the same poll was conducted in April, a smaller majority of 51 percent disapproved of the president’s performance in the White House, while 49 percent approved.

The latest Harvard/Harris Poll surveyed 1,886 registered voters between June 17 and June 18.
